Celebrating a Non-Familial Turkey Day?

This will be the first Thanksgiving that I celebrate without my family. And although this is new to me, I am quickly discovering that it is a natural fact for some, namely college students.

Turkey Day is an odd day for universities. It is a holiday, which guarantees some days off; but we are usually granted only a day or two of vacation time. Which to many (broke) college students is not worth the time or airfare that it would take to get home. So they stay put.

But Turkey Day in New York City isn’t so bad. There’s tons of stuff to do.

**There’s always The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The balloons are a spectacular sight and this year’s festivities will include performances by Carly Rae Jepsen, Neon Trees and Karmin.

But if balloons freak you out, have a Friends Thanksgiving Potluck. I’m sure there are others who decided to stay in the city, so invite them over. Everyone brings a dish and a bottle of wine; and you’ll have yourself a fine Thanksgiving.

Brooklyn Magazine’s article “A Guide To Surviving Straggler Thanksgiving” has great tips for the non-traditional Thanksgiving, such as their advice on liquor:

*

“Buy all of it, buy every kind, buy more than you think you need. It doesn’t go bad, you know, and nothing’s open during the day if more people show up and supplies run low. There’s really no room to waffle. Plus, you want to get everyone drunk enough that they’re willing to play the (sappy, totally great) ‘what’s everyone grateful for’ game.”

They also suggest stocking up on movies:

“Get your Netflix queue in order now. Miracle on 34th St., Die Hard and Planes, Traines and Automobiles are obvious options if you’re staying on-theme. The second Addams Family movie has that great Thanksgiving pageant where wealthy children are burned to death which is fun, too.”

 ***

I second the Addams Family choice. There’s nothing better that watching a diabolical Thanksgiving while eating turkey and chugging wine.

Like I said, Turkey Day in the city won’t be so bad.
